About Us

David Hoch invented "Hokey Spokes" in 2001 and founded Illumination Designs Works in 2002. Hokey Spokes are unique bicycle safety lights which allow riders to display computer-generated images and text inside the spoke cage of their bicycle wheels while riding at night.

Hokey Spokes has been featured in Newsweek, US News and World Report, Teleconnect, Telecom Gear, Telecom Sources, Mac Home Journal, Wired magazine, CNBC, Playboy, Dateline NBC and others.

They were first introduced to the public at the Boston Gift Show in February 2001 and were received with a great deal of enthusiasm and interest.

In May of 2005, the Hokey Spoke Company was purchased in Boston by Carole and Richard Barnes and moved to Indiana.  Richard Barnes worked with David Hoch to develop the Hokey Spoke prototypes in 2001 and helped bring the product to market.

In December 2007 Angel Dawson approached Carole and Richard Barnes with a view to import Hokey Spokes into South Africa. She was granted exclusivity of importation and distribution of Hokey Spokes for Southern Africa by Carole and Richard Barnes.
